Casais de mesmo sexo e parentalidade: um olhar sobre o uso das tecnologias reprodutivas
(2015) VITULE, Camila; COUTO, Marcia Thereza; MACHIN, Rosana
Same-sex couples’ perceptions about the use of reproductive technologies in order to put plans for parenthood into effect are discussed in this paper. This qualitative study was based on semistructured interviews that were conducted in 2011 and 2012, with 26 respondents (12 couples, one man and one woman) who were living in the greater São Paulo region of Brazil. It was noted that biological bonds preponderated in the discourse of the women, who tended to want to use reproductive technologies, especially reception of oocytes from partner (ROPA). Even when men expressed the desire to have a genetically related child, they chose adoption because of fear of the bonds that might become established through pregnancy between the surrogate mother and the child, among other reasons. The medicalization of society, and how science, technology and the market are imbricated in creating healthcare needs, is discussed.

La monoparentalidad femenina elegida en Brasil: estrategias reproductivas
(2022) MACHIN, Rosana; WATARI, Fernanda Lye; COUTO, Marcia Thereza
Abstract A growing phenomenon in several countries, maternal single parenting by choice is gaining momentum due to assisted reproductive technologies (ART), which enable women to become mothers using genetic material from third parties. We will investigate the reasons behind the choice to become a single mother through access to assisted reproductive technologies. This qualitative empirical study is supported by ten semi-structured interviews with women of childbearing age, residents of São Paulo state (SP), Brazil, who were seeking, undergoing or had undergone ART, with or without success. Participants were recruited using the snowball method and the number of interviews was limited via theoretical saturation. Reproductive strategies were influenced by social, political and economic aspects that determine individual reproductive decisions, such as treatment costs, legal regulations, choosing third party genetic material and the existing support network. Female autonomy and financial independence are factors that contribute to the choice to be a single mother. These women must navigate the prevailing social norms and values (which are culturally standardised) to overcome normative elements and modify social norms.

Lesbian reproductive practices: reflections on genetics and health
(2017) VITULE, Camila; MACHIN, Rosana; COUTO, Marcia Thereza
The relationship between science, technology and capital, which are intrinsic to Reproductive Technologies (RT), makes them a possibility of reproductive choice and an alternative for lesbians who wish to have children. The article seeks to reflect on the projects formulated based on the statements of lesbian couples who had used or had plans to use RT. Interviews were conducted with eight couples of women with ages between 26 and 45, all self-declared Caucasians, who had completed higher education and were living in the Greater Sao Paulo region between 2010 and 2011. The results reveal the preference of the respondents for donor sperm originating from a sperm bank and also the importance placed on information on the family history of health of the donor. A noteworthy finding is the interest in importing from an American sperm bank, because of an alleged limited availability of samples in Brazil and the fact that they provide more information about the donors. Thus, while RT enable non-biological parenting, genetics is considered important thereby contributing to the medicalization of parenthood.

Formação médica e assistência aos processos de abortamento: a perspectiva de residentes de duas universidades públicas em São Paulo, Brasil
(2019) MACHIN, Rosana; COUTO, Marcia Thereza; ROCHA, Ana Luisa Smith; COSTA, Maria Renata Mencacci
Abortion is a major public health issue that cuts across various specialities. This study focused on abortion care and its relatioship with the training received in Gynecology and Obstetrics and Family and Community Medicine by residents of two public Colleges in Sao Paulo. A qualitative research design was adopted consisting of the administration of in-depth interviews with 13 residents. The obstetrics and gynaecology residents reported that they relied on practical experience to provide abortion care, while the family and community medicine residents recounted that they discussed the theme and its connection with gender isssues. Clinical knowledge, the devlopment of skills and techniques, and adopting a gender-sensitive approach in training were revealed to be vital components of comprehensive abortion care.

A (in)visibilidade gênero no currículo e na prática de duas especialidades médicas
(2021) COUTO, Marcia Thereza; MACHIN, Rosana; COSTA, Maria Renata Mencacci; ROCHA, Ana Luisa Smith; MODESTO, Antônio Augusto; GERMANI, Ana Claudia Camargo
Abstract: Introduction: Medicine as an area of knowledge and practice has rendered invisible the importance of gender as an analytical category in medical education, as well as the impacts of gender differences and inequalities expressed in the context of clinical practice. Gender is recognized as a crucial aspect in medical education, mainly in the sense of promoting the quality of health care, considering gender differences in symptoms, risk factors for the disease and the care plan established in the context of the therapeutic relationship. Objective: Based on this assumption, qualitative design research was conducted on the perception of training received on gender in the context of undergraduate and medical specialization of residents in Gynecology and Obstetrics and Family and Community Medicine at two public schools in the city of São Paulo. Method: The research used the in-depth interview technique. In 2016, 13 residents of both specialities participated in the survey: seven from Gynecology and Obstetrics and six from Family and Community Medicine. The inclusion criterion was to be a doctor in a medical residency in Family and Community Medicine and Gynecology and Obstetrics at the two public universities participating in the study. The participants were accessed by the snowball recruitment technique, seeking a non-probabilistic sample, in which the study participants indicated other participants to the point of saturation. Results: Despite the differences identified among the participants, according to the residency programs, concerning the gender approach in medical training and its repercussions in clinical practice, with higher appropriation by residents of Family and Community Medicine, essential gaps in training stand out, within the scope of undergraduate training and specialization. Conclusion: Knowledge and the development of skills and techniques based on a gender approach in medical education are fundamental for the exercise of comprehensive care that considers the sociocultural conformations of patients and their implications for the health of the disease process.
