It was like this for me: homosexual, transvestite, and, now, trans: trans performativity, family, and health care
(2020) PAULINO, Danilo Borges; MACHIN, Rosana; PASTOR-VALERO, Maria
Transsexuality is an identity experience that emerges as an inevitable response to a way of organizing social life and, consequently, health care based on the production of subjects. We aim to understand how a certain trans identity context mobilizes identity performances, in articulation with family and health service. We performed an ethnography with a semi-structured interview and participant observation in a health service specialized in trans-specific care in the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), between December 2017 and July 2018. The story of Marilda was highlighted for being emblematic when narrating the transition from ""homosexual man"" to ""transvestite"" and, currently, to ""trans woman,"" in an identity performance that aims for family recognition and belonging, access to health, education, and a profession other than prostitution. Her story allows us to understand that trans people construct different meanings for their identity experiences, with elements that can reiterate binarism and heteronormativity. It is important to recognize, within the family and health context, that different identity performances are possible and that their senses may compose the integral health care of each trans person.

CROSS-BORDER REPRODUCTION: THE REPRODUCTIVE MARKET IN ANGOLA BRAZIL
(2018) MACHIN, Rosana; AUGUSTO, Maria Helena Oliva; MENDOSA, Douglas
Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) have grown significantly since the first birth through in vitro fertilization (IVF) in 1978 in the United Kingdom. Despite the massive global expansion of ART services over the past years, they remain inaccessible in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this article, we consider transnational mobility around ARTs by investigating the search for infertility treatment by Angolan couples in Brazil based on empirical material produced on the services of assisted reproduction in Brazil. Quantitative and qualitative methodologies were used. The quantitative online survey, answered by 84 out of 141 fertility clinics in Brazil, showed that there were a significant number of people coming to this country from Africa, Europe and North and South America, with a significant proportion of couples from Angola. To explore those findings, in-depth interviews were carried out with health professionals in Brazil (Sao Paulo) and Angola, and couples undergoing fertility treatments. The study discusses the dynamics involved in seeking treatment from developing countries (south-south relationship), the reproductive strategies and their implications in terms of cultural practices and community.

The impact of Covid-19 on marginalized groups: the contribution of Intersectionality as theoretical and political perspective
(2021) MARQUES, Ana Lucia Marinho; SORRENTINO, Isa da Silva; RODRIGUES, Julliana Luiz; MACHIN, Rosana; OLIVEIRACC, Elda de; COUTOM, Marcia Thereza
The Covid-19 pandemic poses a number of challenges to governments and society. The pandemic has detrimental effects on regions characterized by deep social inequality and the most vulnerable populations, leading to the need for theoretical and methodological frameworks to help understand its impacts and build strategies to address them. This critical essay addresses the interconnection between social markers of the difference in the production of the inequalities that affect marginalized social groups, such as homeless drug users, sex workers, domestic workers and the young LGBTQIA+ community, and analyzes the strengths of the intersectional perspective for the analysis of problems and construction of policies to tackle them.

Between the particular and the general: constitution of ""black madness"" in the Hospice of Juquery, Sao Paulo, Brazil - 1898-1920
    (2019) MACHIN, Rosana; MOTA, Andre
Based on a socio-historical perspective, the present article discusses the problematization of the race issue in psychiatric knowledge by analyzing the scientific production developed by the Hospice of Juquery and its daily operations, through access to records of its asylum practices. The studied period, 1898 to 1920, includes the creation of the institution and its management under Franco da Rocha, its founder, a time when the debate about the free man and its significance to the nation's formation began to take shape. The source text was extracted from the clinical medical histories of inpatients, as well as the records and scientific production developed by the institution during the studied period.

Gender and sexuality in medical curriculums: the perspective of teachers on a medical degree program (abstract: p. 17)
    (2024) NASCIMENTO, Adriana; MACHIN, Rosana
Including the development of knowledge and skills related to the gender approach in medical training is essential for the delivery of comprehensive care. This study focuses on the teaching of gender and sexuality on a medical degree program from the perspective of teachers. We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to collect empirical data. Sixteen interviews were conducted in 2022 with teachers responsible for subjects/modules in medical specialties on a medical degree program in the state of Sao Paulo. Despite the recognition given to the importance of teaching gender and sexuality in medical training, a biomedical and/or disease-based approach to these topics prevails in the curriculum. Challenges include generational issues, including the lack of skills needed to deal with these topics, and limited interaction between medical specialties.

Anonimato e segredo na reprodução humana com participação de doador: mudanças em perspectivas
    (2016) MACHIN, Rosana
Reproductive technologies, when separating sexuality from reproduction, interfered not only in the relationships between the sexes, but also in the relationships of filiation, enabling the emergence of family settings due to the access to genetic material from others (egg, semen or embryo donors). The secrecy and anonymity that have always involved gamete donors have been challenged. In the last twenty years, various countries changed their legislation, adopting the policy of open identity of the donor of the genetic material. The possibility to know and have access to this identity (when reaching adulthood) or even the search for half-brothers can be a reality in many countries for children born through access to reproductive technology. The article emphasizes the matter of secrecy and anonymity involving the use of genetic material from others in reproductive technologies. The argument is set up through the debate in the United Kingdom concerning the abolition of the anonymity and its implications under the perspective of donors, claimant couples and the child. The study also reflects on the conceptions of family involved in this debate.
