dc.description.abstractAbstract A growing phenomenon in several countries, maternal single parenting by choice is gaining momentum due to assisted reproductive technologies (ART), which enable women to become mothers using genetic material from third parties. We will investigate the reasons behind the choice to become a single mother through access to assisted reproductive technologies. This qualitative empirical study is supported by ten semi-structured interviews with women of childbearing age, residents of São Paulo state (SP), Brazil, who were seeking, undergoing or had undergone ART, with or without success. Participants were recruited using the snowball method and the number of interviews was limited via theoretical saturation. Reproductive strategies were influenced by social, political and economic aspects that determine individual reproductive decisions, such as treatment costs, legal regulations, choosing third party genetic material and the existing support network. Female autonomy and financial independence are factors that contribute to the choice to be a single mother. These women must navigate the prevailing social norms and values (which are culturally standardised) to overcome normative elements and modify social norms.eng
dc.description.abstractResumen La monoparentalidad femenina por elección es un fenómeno creciente en varios países y está cobrando impulso gracias a las tecnologías de reproducción asistida (TRA) al permitir a las mujeres ser madres utilizando material genético de terceros. Investigaremos los motivos que llevan a la elección voluntaria de la maternidad monoparental mediante acceso a las tecnologías reproductivas asistidas. De naturaleza cualitativa, el estudio empírico tiene soporte en diez entrevistas semiestructuradas a mujeres en edad fértil, residentes en São Paulo-SP, que estaban en tratamiento reproductivo o lo habían realizado, con o sin éxito. Las participantes fueron reclutadas mediante el método de bola de nieve. El número de entrevistas se limitó usando la saturación teórica. En cuanto a las estrategias reproductivas, se observó la influencia de aspectos sociales, políticos y económicos que determinan las decisiones reproductivas individuales, así como el costo del tratamiento, las normas legales, la elección del material genético de terceros y la red de apoyo existente. La autonomía femenina y la independencia financiera son factores que contribuyen a la elección de este tipo de maternidad. Se considera que estas mujeres negocian con las normas y valores sociales hegemónicos (procesos que son culturalmente estandarizados), transgrediendo elementos normativos y modificando normas sociales.spa
