bookPart Reabilitação neuropsicológica(2013) MONTEIRO, Luciana de Carvalho; COVRE, Priscila; FUENTES, Daniel- Correlation between insight dimensions and cognitive functions in patients with deficit and nondeficit schizophrenia(2013) PEGORARO, Luiz F. L.; DANTAS, Clarissa R.; BANZATO, Claudio E. M.; FUENTES, DanielPrevious studies have shown correlations between poor insight and neurocognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Deficit schizophrenia has been associated with worse cognitive functioning and poorer insight. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between insight dimensions (measured by Schedule for the Assessment of Insight-Expanded Version and its factors) and specific neurocognitive functions (assessed through a battery of neuropsychological tests) considering separately patients with deficit (n = 29) and nondeficit schizophrenia (n = 44), categorized according to the Schedule for the Deficit Syndrome. We found that working memory correlated positively and significantly with awareness of mental illness in both groups. In nondeficit group, awareness of mental illness correlated additionally with verbal fluency and attention. If confirmed by further studies, these results may have important consequences, such as the need of tailoring differently cognitive rehabilitation for each group.
conferenceObject DECISION MAKING IN ROLANDIC EPILEPSY(2013) LUNARDI, L.; FUENTES, D.; GUIMARAES, C.; BOSCARIOL, M.; MANREZA, M. L.; MIZIARA, C.; GUERREIRO, M.Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the decision-making style in children with rolandic epilepsy (RE) and compare their performance with healthy children taking into account clinical variables of epilepsy. Method: We evaluated 42 children, 17 with RE (RE Group) and 25 healthy controls (Control Group). All children were assessed with the Iowa Gabling Task (IGT), the most used instrument to evaluate the decision-making style, and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) to investigate the intellectual level (estimated IQ). The clinical variables of epilepsy were: age of seizure onset and remission, type of seizure (partial vs. generalized), use of AED (none, monotherapy or polytherapy), and seizure lateralization (right, left, and bilateral). Results: No significant differences were found between the two groups. However, when analysing the RE group, we observed that the later the onset of epilepsy, the best style of decision making presented (p = 0.04). The same was true when comparing the intellectual level of the RE group: the higher the IQ, the better the decision-making style (p = 0.02). Conclusion: We conclude that although RE is known as a benign entity, difficulty in decision-making ability may be observed. More studies are necessary to corroborate our findings.bookPart Funções executivas e envelhecimento(2013) PAULA, Jonas Jardim de; SILVA, Katiúcia Karine Martins da; FUENTES, Daniel; MALLOY-DINIZ, Leandro F.- SEX DIFFERENCES IN DIMENSIONS OF IMPULSIVITY IN A NON-CLINICAL SAMPLE(2013) LAGE, Guilherme Menezes; ALBUQUERQUE, Maicon Rodrigues; FUENTES, Daniel; CORREA, Humberto; MALLOY-DINIZ, Leandro FernandesImpulsivity has been more closely associated with men than with women because men are more often involved in illegal behaviors. The few studies that have investigated sex differences in impulsivity have used self-report questionnaires and have obtained contradictory results. Two computerized behavioral tests were administered to 125 healthy undergraduate students (75 women, M age 23.8 yr.; 50 men, M age 25.0 yr.). Men exhibited higher scores on motor impulsivity, but there were no significant differences between men and women on attentional and non-planning impulsivity scores. These findings are discussed in terms of the relationship between impulsivity and low-and high-order control.
