    BackgroundThe macrophages associated with solid tumors are related to the progression or regression of tumors, depending on the differentiation in M1 or M2. M2 subtype promotes angiogenesis, remodeling, and tissue repair (tumor proliferation). In contrast, M1 produces toxic mediators and presents antigens, destroying microorganisms and tumor cells. The microenvironment of most aggressive forms of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) shows an increase in macrophages due to M2 phenotype compared to noninvasive forms. The treatment of nodular BCC by Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) provides high cure rates, but relapses can occur. AimsTo compare the total population of macrophages and their subpopulations M1 and M2 in cases of recurrent and nonrecurrent nodular BCC after excision by MMS. Materials & MethodsHistological sections obtained from paraffin blocks of nine cases of recurrent nodular BCC after MMS and 18 cases of nonrecurrent nodular BCC operated by MMS were immunostained for iNOS, CD204, CD163, and CD68. The expression of these markers was analyzed by image analysis. ResultsNo significant differences were found between the groups in relation to the average percentage of M1 cells, M2 cells, and total cells. Discussion and ConclusionA relationship was not seen between tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) and tumor recurrence.

    Cutaneous New World Leishmaniasis on a Port-wine stain birthmark

    We present an interesting case report of two sarcoid-like lesions on a port-wine stain (PWS) birthmark in a Brazilian patient which on investigation proved to be cutaneous leishmaniasis.

    Tungiasis under dermoscopy: in vivo and ex vivo examination of the cutaneous infestation due to Tunga penetrans

    The female flea Tunga penetrans is responsible for a cutaneous parasitosis known as Tungiasis. We report the clinical case of a 12 year-old Caucasian boy who sought treatment in a dermatological private office due to a painful lesion in the plantar area and whose dermoscopic examination, without skin contact, allowed the visualization of parasite's movement inside the skin. The diagnosis of tungiasis is clinical, but it can be aided by in vivo and ex vivo dermoscopic examination of the lesion.

    Donovanosis

    Donovanosis is a chronic, progressive, and indolent bacterial disease that affects the skin and mucous membranes of the genital and perigenital regions, often associated with sexual transmission, and with low infectivity. The malignant transformation of donovanosis lesions occurs exceptionally, as is usually seen in long-term ulcerations. (C) 2020 Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia.

    First report of cutaneous mycetoma by Paecilomyces variotii and the successful treatment with combined itraconazole and terbinafine along with resection surgeries

    Mycetoma is a progressively mutilating infectious disease of the subcutaneous tissue that affects the skin and deep structures, which is poorly responsive to chemotherapy. Here, we report a skin mycetoma caused by Paecilomyces variotii, an uncommon fungus of human infections, and the therapeutic approach that resulted in a complete cure of the patient.

    Skin cancer prevention campaign in childhood: survey based on 3676 children in Brazil

    Background and objectivesPrimary skin cancer prevention campaigns are essential and more effective among children, not only because of the importance of sun exposure effects during this period, but also because this age is when individuals are developing behaviours. The Brazilian Society of Dermatology - Regional State of Sao Paulo developed and conducted the programme named The Sun, Friend of Childhood', a school health education and disease prevention project for children and parents. Our objective was to evaluate the cognitive and behavioural effects of the children and parents before and after an education model-based intervention of sun protection. MethodsWe carried out a study on a school population of Social Service of Industry - Regional State of SAo Paulo, from the first to the fifth years of the regular course (6-10 years). Our educational project was planned to be based on two children's learning tools (comic magazine and a DVD cartoon). Questionnaires in relation to habits and knowledge in sun exposure were applied to the children (3776) before and (2748) after the intervention. A questionnaire was applied to 3663 parents regarding personal details and habits of their children. ResultsAccording to the McNemar's statistical test, all changes in the children in acquiring new knowledge about good practices for sun exposure were statistically significant. ConclusionsEducative sun exposure programmes in childhood are a relevant tool to modify the history of life for next generations, to concern the skin cancer and good health practices.
