dc.description.abstract | Abuse of alcohol and abstinence from alcohol have been related to the appearance of epileptiform activities in the limbic system. Hippocampal formation appears to be an important source of epileptic activity and for such a condition is particularly vulnerable to pathological changes induced by ethanol. In vitro and in vivo studies have revealed that prolonged use of ethanol promotes disturbances in different subcellular mechanisms, acting directly on the lipid structure of the cell membrane, ion channels, cation-chloride cotransporters, and subunits of several receptors. Although it is complex and poorly understood, the continuous interaction of alcohol in these substrates leads to an imbalance of ionic homeostasis. These modifications, in the long run, promote states of hyperexcitability that, if uncontrolled, can lead to reverberating mechanisms, degeneration and cell death, making hippocampal tissues susceptible to epilepsy. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
