    Lymphedema in Cancer Patients
    (2022) ANDRADE, M. F. C. de; BERGMANN, A.; MONTAG, E.; MUNARETTO, J. B.; JACOMO, A.
Metastasis to distant organs is the most important factor related to cancer survival. Tumor cells spread via blood and lymphatic vessels, systems responsible for transporting fluid and cells. Besides its structural role in cancer metastasis, the lymphatic system displays a critical functional interaction with developing tumors. In clinical settings, full evaluation of the lymphatic system involvement is crucial for treatment and prognosis in cancer patients. Comprehension of physiological and pathological processes involving the lymphatic system is a continuously growing field of basic and clinical research due to recent advances in molecular Lymphology. However, the most interesting biological aspects of lymphatic metastasis of cancer are beyond our objective in this chapter. Here we will focus on the consequences of cancer spread and therapeutic approaches and their impact on the lymphatic system. The knowledge of basic function, structure and distribution of the lymphatic system is essential to diagnosis and treatment in Oncology. In this chapter we will highlight relevant aspects of lymphatic anatomy as well as current topics in conservative and surgical treatment of lymphedema. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

    Thyroid
    (2022) PATEL, R.; ZENDER, C.; YARLAGADDA, B.; KOWALSKI, L. P.; BEWLEY, A. F.; MOORE, M. G.; ESKANDER, A.; SILVERMAN, D. A.; KNEUERTZ, P. J.; NABHAN, F. A.; KANG, S.
This chapter uses real-life clinical cases to present the history of illness, physical examination, and clear and up-to-date explanations of treatment strategies for thyroid. It contains full-color photographs, illustrations, and diagrams to better support readers in acquiring, synthesizing, and applying essential skills and knowledge in a clinical context. The chapter also presents multiple choice questions with answers to help medical students and trainees evaluate their learning and contextualize their knowledge. It is an indispensable study aid for trainee clinicians, residents, and fellows studying for board certification and other exams, and an excellent reference guide for oncologists, otolaryngologists, surgeons, and other practitioners working in medical oncology, radiation oncology, and oromaxillofacial surgery. © 2022 American Head and Neck Society.

Monitoring of the Superior Laryngeal Nerve
    (2022) CERNEA, C. R.; VOLPI, E. M.; BARCZYNSKI, M.
The external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) provides motor supply to the cricothyroid muscle (CTM). This muscle approximates the thyroid and cricoid cartilages, stretching the vocal fold, thus being essential for the production of high-frequency sounds. The surgeon must maintain the EBSLN to preserve a normal phonation, particularly among females and voice professionals. One essential tool to achieve this goal is the use of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). It helps the surgeon identify the EBSLN during the dissection of the superior thyroid pole, before severing the superior thyroid vessels. In addition, it can assure the functional integrity of the nerve at the end of the thyroid lobectomy. The objective of this chapter is to familiarize the reader with the anatomic variations of the EBSLN and with the use of IONM techniques to minimize the risk of its intraoperative injury during a thyroidectomy. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

    Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma
    (2023) SANTOS-SILVA, A. R.; FONSECA, F. P.; SCARINI, J. F.; INNOCENTINI, L. M. A. R.; KOWALSKI, L. P.; LOPES, M. A.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant epithelial neoplasm affecting the oral cavity, accounting for more than 90% of cases. Most patients smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or both. Since the time of diagnosis is the most important prognostic factor for the patient’s affected, this chapter overviews the essential clinical aspects of oral squamous cell carcinoma, highlighting clinical presentations, diagnosis guidelines, and therapeutic approaches. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

    Oral Leukoplakia and Erythroplakia
    (2023) SANTOS-SILVA, A. R.; ALVES, F. A.; FONSECA, F. P.; SCARINI, J. F.; INNOCENTINI, L. M. A. R.; KOWALSKI, L. P.; LOPES, M. A.
Leukoplakia and erythroplakia are the two most common potentially malignant disorders of the oral cavity. Both lesions in a small and significant proportion of cases, respectively, turn into cancer. Most lesions are asymptomatic, and the main objective of treatment is to prevent their malignant transformation. The role of the dentist in the diagnosis and management cannot be underestimated, and this chapter provides an overview of the current concepts and practical diagnosis and treatment guidelines based on our clinical experience. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

    Head and Neck Surgery
    (2022) SANTOS, A. B. dos; KOWALSKI, L. P.; KöHLER, H. F.; GOLDENBERG, D. C.; TOLEDO, R. N. de; CARVALHO, A. Y. de
Head and neck region is very rich in vascular structures and a site for every incident of malignant neoplasms with potential to nodal metastasis in the carotid sheath that, when operated, may require complex vascular reconstruction with potential morbid complications, especially in salvage surgery. But the region can also be affected by complex benignant neoplasms that may require concomitant endovascular and open approaches for proper treatment, besides the complexity of surrounding anatomical structures, and life-threatening bleeding events. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

    Actinic Cheilitis
    (2023) TAKAHAMA-JúNIOR, A.; SANTOS-SILVA, A. R.; ALVES, F. A.; FONSECA, F. P.; SCARINI, J. F.; INNOCENTINI, L. M. A. R.; KOWALSKI, L. P.
Actinic cheilitis is an inflammatory and potentially malignant condition that mainly affects the lower lip and is caused by long-term chronic sun exposure. Considering the well-established association between actinic cheilitis and the development of squamous cell carcinoma in the lower lip, in this chapter, we highlight the importance of early diagnosis and provide therapeutic approaches to control the disease clinically and prevent its malignant transformation. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
