Abstract: Sao Paulo is the pioneer Brazilian state in transplantation surgery. The Brazilian model for organ sharing has developed a system that prioritizes liver transplantion (LT) for patients who have the highest risk of wait-list mortality. In this paper we present a brief review of the application of mathematical models to the problem of how to improve the speed with which patients with liver failure can receive a liver graft and how alternative criteria for prioritizing patients in the waiting list can be proposed.
