Resumo: Background Obesity and bipolar disorder have been one of the major challenges to medicine. The obesity epidemic has gained global dimensions and bipolar disorder has been diagnosed with an increasing frequency. In recent years, studies have showed the correlation between these pathologies. Comorbidity with the binge eating disorder (BED) was observed in 27,92 %. The generalized anxiety disorder and social phobia was presented in 18 %, followed by alcohol abuse 10,42 %. Conclusions These results suggest that bipolar spectrum illness, is very commom in severly obese subjects, in particular the hypomaniac condition characterized by overactivity. The rates prevalence of bipolar spectrum in morbid obesity intensifies the link between mood disorders and obesitiy and encourages further research.
