- Diabetic Foot(2022) GODOY-SANTOS, A. L.; SPOSETO, R. B.Diabetic foot syndrome is among the most serious complications of diabetes mellitus; it is increasing in worldwide prevalence despite advances in the clinical and metabolic control of diabetes mellitus. It represents great suffering for patients, their families, professionals, and health institutions and for society in general. It is a clinical situation associated with a high financial impact on health systems around the world. Treatment strategies are based on prevention, patient education, a multidisciplinary approach, and the principles of appropriate surgical and non-surgical treatment. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
- Charcot Neuroarthropathy(2022) SPOSETO, R. B.; GODOY-SANTOS, A. L.Charcot’s Neuroarthropathy (CN) is a serious pathology, with devastating impact on mobility and quality of life of the patient. Although its pathophysiology is not completely clear, it is related to sensory neuropathy, repetitive trauma, and increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Currently, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is the disease most related to this pathology. The pathology begins with intense inflammation, associated with fractures and cumulative and progressive dislocations, mainly in the foot and ankle. At the end of the inflammatory phase, bone healing occurs, and the residual deformity is established. The objective of the treatment is to obtain a functional plantigrade foot at the end of the four clinical phases. The initial approach is to protect the foot in the inflammatory phase to avoid progression of the fractures and deformity. After the consolidation phase in case the patient does not adapt to the modification of footwear and orthotics, the surgical treatment for foot realignment should be indicated. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
- Orthopedics: Musculoskeletal Tumors(2022) BAPTISTA, A. M.; REBOLLEDO, D. C. S.; JUNIOR, M. C. M. T.; CORREIA, L. F. M.; CAIERO, M. T.; TEIXEIRA, W. J.; NARAZAKI, D. K.; CAMARGO, A. F. de França; CAMARGO, O. P. deAmputation has historically been the first choice of treatment for patients with bone or soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities involving major blood vessels. However, recent advances in surgical technique have allowed limb-salvage surgery in a significant number of cases. Nowadays, most patients with malignant bone tumors can be treated with limb-salvage procedures whenever wide margins are possible. Surgical resection of bone and soft tissue tumors, with or without adjuvant radiation therapy, is effective in achieving local control, and limb-salvage procedures have been accepted because they achieve survival rates comparable to those of amputation allowing better quality of life. Along with other reconstructive techniques, vascular reconstruction might allow limb-sparing surgery and avoid amputation in patients with malignant tumors involving major vessels. Intraarterial embolization may as well serve as adjuvant therapy for major resection surgeries or therapeutic in some types of irresectable tumors. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
- Lumbar Interbody Fusion Surgeries: LIFS(2022) FERREIRA, R. J. R.; GONçALVES, M. V. M.; BORDINI, E. C.; CRISTANTE, A. F.The surgical techniques known as LIF (lumbar interbody fusion), LLIF (lateral), ALIF (anterior), OLIF (O), PLIF (posterior), and TLIF (transforaminal) consist of minimally invasive procedures. Numerous advantages are recognized for minimally invasive techniques, but neurological complications arising from this type of surgical procedure have been reported in several studies (Kepler et al., Eur Spine J 20(4):550-556, 2011; Le et al., Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 38(1):E13-E20, 2013; He et al., Zhonghua Yi Xue Za Zhi 94(3):178-181, 2014; Quinn et al., Spine (Phila Pa 1976) 40(12):942-947, 2015; Laratta et al., J Spine Surg 4(2):211-219, 2018; Riley et al., Spine J 18(10):1763-1778, 2018). In this chapter, the authors analyze the anatomical aspects of spinal surgeries through the lateral and anterior approaches (LLIF and ALIF), as well as the main stages of neural risk of each procedure. Furthermore, a step-by-step guide has been prepared, with the main techniques used in IONM to assist the neurophysiologist in these procedures. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.
