Resumo
The scientific field known as Molecular Biology has been the subject of research by historians of science and sociologists in developed countries. However, little progress has been made about this topic in developing countries such as Brazil - which have traced specific pathways on the subject in their different regional and local contexts. This article addresses the emergence of Molecular Biology in Brazil, highlighting the history of its organization and development in the state of Sao Paulo between 1952 and 1970. The article presents results of documental research and bibliographical review, complemented by the application of ex-ante-fieldwork interviews with members of the scientific community and leaders of the Sao Paulo Research Foundation, FAPESP. It was verified that the promotion of Molecular Biology in regional context was the result of an explicit activity of negotiation and construction of political alliances between the scientific community and FAPESP. Thus, we sought to advance the understanding of how a set of social factors is capable of interfering on organization and development of a scientific field in Brazilian context.
