R.Background: Some studies have suggested that an autonomic abnormality is associated with cerebral palsy. The modulation effects on autonomic function might be disturbed resulting in unbalanced sympathovagal activity, Aim: To investigate whether children with cerebral palsy (CP) present any cardiac abnormalities compared with healthy controls. Methods: Thirty-three CP children aged 5-14 years and 22 sibling controls underwent echocardiography and heart rate variability evaluations. Snoring and body mass index were also assessed. Results: The CP children presented lower values of body mass index (p=0.02), left ventricular mass index (p=0.03) and E/A ratio (p=0.01), as well as higher cardiac output (p=0.05), heart rate and blood pressure (p=0.01, both) compared with controls. With regard to heart rate variability, CP children presented higher values of High-frequency and Low-frequency and lower Low-frequency/High-frequency ratios (p=0.04, all) than controls Conclusion: Children with CP present with chronic autonomic imbalance and some degree of diastolic impairment. The present results suggest that a cardiac investigation of these patients is warranted. © 2014 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
