R.Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition that affects many subjects worldwide. Despite the physical and psychosocial impacts, there is a lack of therapeutic strategies and a high degree of refractoriness. In the other hand the development of novel treatment approaches is increasingly growing, particularly noninvasive brain stimulation strategies, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). These techniques consist in using induced or injected electric currents to modulate brain activity and have shown promising results in several neuropsychiatric disorders, such as unipolar depression and pain syndromes. Herein, we outline the development of the techniques in patients with BD, either in depression or manic states. The promising findings encourage further investigation of these techniques as potential clinical alternatives in the clinical arsenal of BD. © 2021 Elsevier Inc.
