    Inter- and intra-rater reliability of computerized photogrammetry and universal goniometer in the measurement of hip flexion and abduction

    ABSTRACT The universal goniometer (UG) is the most frequently used tool for measuring range of motion (ROM), with demonstrated reliability. Computerized photogrammetry (CP) is widely used for postural assessment, but its role in the measurement of ROM of hip flexion and abduction has not yet been fully explored. This study aimed to test inter- and intra-rater reliability for measuring ROM of hip flexion and abduction using UG and CP, as well as the reliability between the instruments. Our sample consisted of 40 healthy volunteers (aged from 18 to 28 years). Measurements of ROM were conducted by two independent raters, 15 minutes apart, using UG and CP to assess inter-rater reliability. The procedures were repeated one week later by the first rater (intra-rater reliability). Using UG, inter-rater reliability was excellent for flexion and abduction (ICC=0.92 and 0.91, respectively); using CP, it was rated as very good (ICC=0.77 and 0.80, respectively). Intra-rater reliability using UG was excellent for flexion and abduction (ICC=0.95 and 0.92), and very good using CP (ICC= 0.81 and 0.89). The correlation between the instruments was excellent for flexion and very good for abduction (r=0.92 and r=0.82). Future investigations should seek a more diversified sample and symptomatic patients. Inter- and intra-rater reliability is high when measuring range of motion of hip flexion and abduction using both UG and CP, and the correlation between instruments is excellent for flexion and very good for abduction, meaning that both are valid.

    QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF POSTURAL ALIGNMENT IN YOUNG ADULTS BASED ON PHOTOGRAPHS OF ANTERIOR, POSTERIOR, AND LATERAL VIEWS

    Objective: Postural assessment through photography is a simple method that allows the acquisition of quantitative values to define the alignment of body segments. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively assess the postural alignment of several body segments in standing through anterior, posterior, and lateral views. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 122 subjects were initially evaluated. Seven subjects were excluded from the study after cluster analysis. The final sample had 115 subjects, 75% women with a mean age of 26 + 7 years. Photographs were taken from anterior, posterior, and lateral views after placement of markers on specific anatomical points. Photographs were analyzed using free Postural Analysis Software/Software of Postural Analysis (PAS/SAPO). Quantitative values for postural analysis variables were ascertained for head, upper and lower limbs, and trunk, along with the frequency of inclinations to the left and to the right. Results: Regarding the head, 88% of the sample presented some inclination, 67% of which was to the right. There was a predominance of right inclination of the shoulder and pelvis in 68% and 43% of study subjects, respectively. Lower limbs presented mean alignment of 178 in the anterior view, and the trunk showed predominant right inclination in 66% of participants. Conclusion: Small asymmetries were observed in anterior and posterior views. This study suggests that there is no symmetry in postural alignment and that small asymmetries represent the normative standard for posture in standing. (J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2011;34:371-380)

    Lower urinary tract symptoms and perineal function in women with and without fibromyalgia: a cross-sectional study

    Introduction and hypothesis Fibromyalgia (FM) studies have focused on pain, but a 2010 review of the diagnostic criteria pointed to other symptoms including urinary incontinence (UI). Women with FM present pain, fatigue, and reduced muscle strength; the research hypothesis was that pelvic floor (PF) muscles would be weaker; therefore, FM could be associated with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and compromise quality of life (QoL). The aim of this paper was to compare PF function, urinary symptoms, and their impact on QoL in women with and without FM and to verify if there is association between FM and LUTS. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study with 126 sexually active women aged between 19 and 65 years old, distributed in two groups, women with FM (FG n = 62) and without FM (NFG n = 64). Perineal function was the primary outcome and was assessed by perineometry and bidigital vaginal palpation (PERFECT Scheme). Presence of LUTS was assessed by interview based on international definition, and the impact of UI on QoL was evaluated by the King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ). Results FG presented worse PF function on clinical exam (p < 0.001) and perineometry (p = 0.04). LUTS was more frequent among FG (p < 0.001). In terms of QoL, FG obtained lower KHQ scores for general health perception (p < 0.001) and sleep/energy (p < 0.003) domains. The odds of presenting LUTS is 5.03 (95%CI 2.35-10.75) higher in women with FM. Conclusion Women with FM had worse perineal function, had more LUTS, and presented UI more frequently, which negatively impacts on QoL.
