ABSTRACT Introduction: Bibliometric methods have been used to analyze study designs and levels of evidence of articles published in various periodicals. Such information does not exist in the field of Brazilian plastic surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the study designs and levels of evidence of articles published in the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (“Revista Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica,” RBCP), the only Brazilian journal devoted exclusively to plastic surgery. Methods: Study designs and levels of evidence of articles published in the RBCP between 2005 and 2012 were bibliometrically and quantitatively analyzed. The articles published in two periods (2005- 2008 and 2009-2012) were compared, in order to characterize the evolution of the scientific production of the RBCP. Results: During the period analyzed, 603 scientific articles met the inclusion criteria. The overall analysis revealed a significant predominance of retrospective studies and articles with level of evidence III (p < 0.05). The comparison between the periods showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the proportion of case series and scientific articles with level of evidence IV (2005-2008 < 2009-2012), and a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the proportion of articles with level of evidence V (2005-2008 > 2009-2012). Conclusion: This study showed that a predominance of retrospective studies and articles with level of evidence III published in the RBCP between 2005 and 2012.

Análise bibliométrica dos artigos publicados na revista brasileira de cirurgia plástica entre 2005 e 2012. Parte I: análise quantitativa de artigos, autores e distribuição geográfica
(2014) DENADAI, RAFAEL; GOLDENBERG, DOV; RAPOSO-DO-AMARAL, CASSIO EDUARDO
ABSTRACT Introduction: Bibliometric indicators have been implemented in several national and international studies. However, there is no specific information about the scientific articles discussing plastic surgery in Brazil. This study therefore aimed to carry out a bibliometric analysis of articles published in the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (RBCP), the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery. Methods: A bibliometric analysis using quantitative indicators of all articles published in the RBCP was performed to characterize the scientific results over a seven-year period (2005-2012) marked by major changes to the journal. All articles selected were analyzed individually, in order to collect data on article and author numbers, and their geographical distribution. Two periods (2005-2008 vs. 2009-2012) were considered for comparative analysis. Results: A total of 603 articles met the inclusion criteria. The average number of articles published per year and the number of authors per article were 75.38 ± 32.12 articles/year and 3.98 ± 2.01 authors/article, respectively. There was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in articles/year in 20092012 compared to the earlier time period. No significant variations were detected (p > 0.05) in the number of authors/article (2005-2008 = 2009-2012). Most articles came from Brazilian institutions (98.67%; p < 0.05), and the Southeast region (63.70%; p < 0.05) accounted for most of these publications. Conclusion: During the observation period, the number of scientific articles published in the RBCP increased, there was no change in the number of authors per paper, and there was a predominance of articles coming from the Southeast Brazil.

Impacto socioeconômico da pandemia da COVID-19 entre cirurgiões plásticos do Brasil
(2022) RIBEIRO, RENAN DIEGO AMÉRICO; CARNEIRO, IGOR CASTRO; CLIVATTI, GUSTAVO MOREIRA; ABBAS, LAIELLY; MONTEIRO, GUSTAVO GOMES RIBEIRO; GOLDENBERG, DOV; GEMPERLI, ROLF
ABSTRACT Introduction: Global sanitary crisis caused by the spread of COVID-19 induced many health services to stop performing non-urgent surgical procedures. In the scenario of plastic surgery, where most procedures are elective, socioeconomic consequences are estimated for these specialists. The objective of this study is to measure this impact. Methods: Effects of the pandemic within the clinical practice of Brazilian plastic surgeons were investigated through an online questionnaire addressed to members of the Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Plástica. Results: A survey was applied to 645 surgeons. Most respondents reported operation restrictions on procedures and income reduction, especially in regions severely affected by the pandemic. Plastic surgeons with more than 10 years of experience were the most affected. High contamination rates, mental overload, decreased physical activity, and psychiatric medications have also been reported. Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic brought changes to the personal and professional life of the Brazilian plastic surgeon. Due to the significant reduction in the workload, there were financial impacts on specialists from all country regions, besides physical and mental health issues. Adaptations were mandatory to maintain services and explore new areas of activity to supply the low demand for cosmetic surgery during the crisis.

Análise bibliométrica dos artigos publicados na revista brasileira de cirurgia plástica entre 2005 e 2012. Parte II: serviços de origem, apresentações prévias e tipos de artigos
(2014) DENADAI, RAFAEL; GOLDENBERG, DOV; RAPOSO-DO-AMARAL, CASSIO EDUARDO
ABSTRACT Introduction: Although bibliometry has been used to characterize scientific results in numerous national and international journals, bibliometric data on scientific publications related to plastic surgery are scarce. Therefore, this study analyzed articles published in the Brazilian Journal of Plastic Surgery (BJPS), the official journal of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery (BSPS). Methods: A quantitative bibliometric analysis of all articles published in the BJPS between 2005 and 2012 was performed. Information regarding presentation of the work at scientific meetings, institution type (BSPS-accredited or not), and article category were extracted from the articles included in this study. Data from two time periods (2005-2008 and 2009-2012) were analyzed and compared. Results: A total of 603 scientific articles fulfilled the insertion criteria. Most articles were from accredited services institutions (58.21%), had not been presented at scientific meetings (84.74%), and were published as original articles (78.77%) in the BJPS (p<0.05 for all comparisons). Comparative analysis revealed a significant reduction in the proportion of review articles and a significant increase in the proportion of scientific articles that had not previously been presented at scientific meetings in 2005-2008 compared to 2009-2012 (p<0.05 for both). Conclusion: This survey revealed a prevalence of original articles published by BSPS-accredited institutions that were not presented at scientific meetings.

Tratamento intralesional de malformações linfáticas com ênfase na escleroterapia com picibanil (OK-432): revisão sistemática
(2016) PATATAS, OLÍVIA HELENA GOMES; GOLDENBERG, DOV; GEMPERLI, ROLF
ABSTRACT Introduction: We performed a retrospective systematic review of studies reporting the use of Picibanil for treatment of lymphatic malformations (LMs). Methods: We searched the PubMed database for available studies, including those published between January 1990 and April 14, 2013. The search strategy involved the use of the keywords “OK-432” or “Picibanil” and “lymphatic malformation.” Information was compiled regarding the reported mechanism of action, indications, contraindications, efficacy, administration, side effects, complications, and advantages and disadvantages compared to those of other modalities. Results: Forty-four studies were found, of which 27 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Picibanil is a lyophilized preparation of a low-virulence strain of Streptococcus pyogenes inactivated with penicillin G. Its mechanism of action is unclear, but it has been speculated that it causes a controlled inflammatory response with adhesion of cyst walls. Picibanil is almost unanimously indicated for the treatment of macrocystic LMs, which show a greater effectiveness response compared to that shown by microcystic or mixed LMs. Picibanil is usually administered by puncturing, either with direct visualization or guided by ultrasound, with the patient under general anesthesia. The most widely used preparation comprises 0.1 mg of Picibanil in 10 mL of saline. Side effects are mostly mild, with pain, swelling, and fever being the most frequently reported. Conclusion: The studies had low scientific evidence. A systematic review found that Picibanil is useful against any LM, with better results in macrocystic lesions. Efficacy was comparable to that of other therapies. No specific contraindication was presented. Although the mechanism of action has not been established, the inclusion of Picibanil as a treatment option is warranted.

Validação para a língua portuguesa do Gothenburg Trismus Questionnaire (GTQ)
(2019) GOLDENBERG, DOV; NARIKAWA, RITA; ALBUQUERQUE, CLAUDIANO MARTINS; KOWALSKI, LUIS PAULO
ABSTRACT Currently, the Gothenburg Trismus Questionnaire (GTQ) is the only quality-of-life questionnaire specific for the assessment of trismus. The disease, characterized by limited mouth opening, impairs usual activities such as eating, swallowing, talking, and performing oral hygiene, causing great discomfort to patients. Translation of quality-of-life questionnaires plays an important role in promoting health awareness in the populations of different countries. This study aimed to validate the Portuguese version of the GTQ to allow its effective application in Portuguese-speaking populations. The Portuguese version of the GTQ was successfully validated through the following steps: translation, back translation, cultural adaptation, and revalidation.
