    Men and women do not have the same relation between body composition and bone mineral density in Brazilian people

    Objectives: The main objective this study was to examine if lean mass and the adiposity related with BMD in a eutrophic population of Brazilian adults, in different sites and gender. Methods: A crossectional observational study, without intervention. One hundred non-obese men and women, aged 20-40 years, who did not practice regular physical activity were evaluated. Body composition analysis was conducted by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and multiple regression was used to examine the sex-specific association between adiposity and lean mass profiles. Results: Even after adjusting for age, sex, and BMI, total fat mass was inversely associated with total BMD (β=-4.52 g/cm2, p<0.01). Lean mass was positively associated with BMD and female groups. In our study the lean mass has a postive effect in BMD for eutrophic Brazilian adults, opposite of adiposity. Although when stratified by gender, in adults women lean mass and adiposity have positive effects on BMD, which did not happen with men. © 2017, Brazilian Society of Anatomy. All rights reserved.

    Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels are associated with functional capacity but not with postural balance in osteoporotic postmenopausal women

    OBJECTIVES: In post-menopausal women with osteoporosis, insufficient vitamin D levels decrease calcium fixation in the bones and calcium transport in the sarcoplasmic reticulum, which impairs muscle strength, possibly leading to detrimental consequences for the preservation of functional capacity and postural balance, fall prevention, and fracture risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between vitamin D levels and knee muscle strength, postural balance and functional mobility among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 63 osteoporotic older women (aged 60.6 +/- 3.1 years). The subjects completed the Timed Up and Go Test to measure functional mobility, and postural balance was assessed on the AccuSway Plus portable force platform. Maximal strength was tested using an isokinetic dynamometer for knee flexion and extension. The subjects were assessed as a group and were divided into quartiles according to their vitamin D levels. RESULTS: Vitamin D status was independently associated with the normalized peak torque of the knee extensors (beta = 0.59; p < 0.04) and Timed Up and Go Test (beta =-0.07; p < 0.001). No between-group differences were observed in the demographic and clinical variables or postural balance; however, significant differences were observed in the Timed Up and Go Test, and the group with the highest vitamin D levels exhibited better performance than the group with the lowest vitamin D levels (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The serum vitamin D levels were independently associated with normalized knee extension strength and functional mobility in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

    Analysis of acceleration time of ankle in long-distance runners and triathletes

    INTRODUCTION: Adequate muscle reaction time is essential for protecting the joints against injuries during sports activities. This phenomenon of time of acceleration has been investigated through methodologies such as trapdoor experiments and electromyography. However, isokinetic analysis is an assessment method that is more dynamic and shows behavior closer to the functionality of the sport. Sports that involve running, such as long distance running and triathlon, have high lower-limb injury rates, particularly in relation to the ankle joint. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare isokinetic acceleration and deceleration times of the dorsiflexor and plantar flexor musculature of the ankle in long-distance runners, triathletes and non-athletic individuals. METHOD: The sample comprised 75 individuals (men aged 18-42 years), divided into three groups: triathlete group, long-distance runner group and control group. The individuals were tested bilaterally on an isokinetic dynamometer. The evaluation modes used were (i) concentric/eccentric for plantar flexion and dorsiflexion, and (ii) eccentric/concentric for plantar flexion and dorsiflexion. We used (a) analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test; (b) Kruskal-Wallis and Müller-Dunn post hoc tsts; (c) Chi-square tests. RESULTS: The acceleration time during concentric contraction was statistically different only between the control group and the long-distance runner group, such that the controls presented faster acceleraton. CONCLUSION: This may signify a deficiency in their motor sensory control during concentric activity of the dorsiflexors.
