Applying association rules to study Bipolar Disorder and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder comorbidity
(2018) CASTRO, Giovanna; SALVINI, Rogerio; SOARES, Fabrizzio A. A. M. N.; NIERENBERG, Andrew A.; SACHS, Gary S.; LAFER, Beny; DIAS, Rodrigo S.
Bipolar Disorder (BD) is characterized by mood changes that manifest as depressive episodes alternating with episodes of euphoria, in varying degrees of intensity. Women with BD may experience worsening symptoms during events of their reproductive life, particularly those suffering from Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). The presence of PMDD in the diagnoses of BD is considered a marker of severity for the disease. In this study, data from a cohort of 1099 women with BD were used for an exploratory analysis using association rules in order to find associations between PMDD and BD symptoms. Of the thousands of generated rules, those that have associations with PMDD were selected and categorized, with confidence levels between 70% and 100%.

Generating facial emotions for diagnosis and training
    (2015) TESTA, Rafael L.; MUNIZ, Antonio H. N.; CARPIO, Liseth. U. S.; DIAS, Rodrigo S.; ROCCA, Cristiana C. A.; MACHADO-LIMA, Ariane; NUNES, Fatima L. S.
The ability to process and identify facial emotions is an essential factor for an individuals social interaction. There are certain psychiatric disorders that can limit an individuals ability to recognize emotions in facial expressions. This problem could be confronted by making use of computational techniques in order to develop learning environments for the diagnosis, evaluation and training in identifying facial emotions. This paper presents an approach that uses image processing techniques, formal languages, anthropometry and Facial Action Coding System (FACS) to generate caricatures that represent facial movements related to neutral, satisfaction, sadness, anger, disgust, fear and surprise emotions. The rules that define the emotions were determined using an AND-OR graph to enable generating these images in a flexible manner. An evaluation conducted with healthy volunteers showed that some emotions are more easily recognized, while for other emotions the caricatures need to be further improved. This is a promising approach, since the parameters used provide flexibility to define the emotional intensity that must be represented.

ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORDS NEEDS FROM THE PSYCHIATRY POINT OF VIEW: THE RESULT OF A 18 MONTH IMPLEMENTATION EXPERIENCE
(2013) COFIEL, Luciana; RAY, Ryan Kumar; DIAS, Rodrigo; ROEDEL, Priscila Matias; GUTIERREZ, Marco Antonio; BRENTANI, Helena
This case report presents the perceived benefits and limitations for patient care of an electronic health record (EHR) system implemented at a tertiary psychiatric institution. The information collection period began with training of users at the beginning of the implementation until 18 months post-implementation. Perceived benefits were related to administrative aspects and information sharing among the healthcare team. Some specialized psychiatric processes were not supported by the system, which limited the benefits for research and specialized patient care. Functioning as a best practice it is therefore necessary to evaluate the EHR system regarding its capacity to support specific processes of this particular medical specialty.
