A perspectiva de professores quanto ao trabalho com crianças com autismo
(2014) PIMENTEL, Ana Gabriela Lopes; FERNANDES, Fernanda Dreux Miranda
Purpose Identify and describe the difficulties and the value assigned to their work by teachers. Methods The study included 51 teachers from mainstream and special schools who had children with ASD among their students. A classification type questionnaire was answered by teachers about the role they play in relation to the student, the difficulties and skills that the teacher has in relation to the student, communication strategies used by both behaviors and interests of children observed by the teacher. Results: The teachers responded that their influence was mainly related to communication and interpersonal relationships, difficulties were mainly related to learning, communication and behavior of the child. They felt that the school offers enough support for your work, but there is very little support from other professionals and lack of appropriate teaching technology. Conclusion Thus, it is concluded that teachers are unprepared to teach these students and need to be better educated and receive more support from other professionals, and thus can provide a better education for children with ASD.

A oferta da terapia fonoaudiológica em locais de assistência a indivíduos com Transtornos do Espectro do Autista (TEA)
(2016) DEFENSE-NETRVAL, Danielle Azarias; FERNANDES, Fernanda Dreux Miranda
ABSTRACT The increased prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) worldwide has been a major public health concern; therefore, discussion about the services and therapies required has become important. This study aimed to characterize the provision of speech-language therapy services in the metropolitan area of Sao Paulo. To this end, a questionnaire with 23 questions was developed based on the Balanced Scorecard methodology. This questionnaire was applied to 854 individuals assisted in 25 ASD services. The results show that only 64% of the ASD services offer speech-language therapy and that the number of individuals assisted is below the expected. Therefore, there is a necessity for better management in the speech-language therapy services offered to the ASD population.

Cognitive flexibility training intervention among children with autism: a longitudinal study
(2017) VARANDA, Cristina de Andrade; FERNANDES, Fernanda Dreux Miranda
Autism is defined by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction in multiple contexts as well as restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior. There are also reported difficulties in the dynamic activation and modification of cognitive processes in response to changes in tasks' demands. Such difficulties are believed to be due to poor flexible cognition. This research aimed to assess and intervene in cognitive flexibility in subjects with autism. Ten subjects diagnosed with autism by psychiatrists, aged 5 years to 13 years and 5 months, were assessed in non-verbal intelligence through Raven's Progressive Matrices in pretest. They were also assessed in cognitive flexibility through Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and in patterns of social interactions, behaviors, and communication through Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R). An intervention program of 14 to 21 sessions was established to enhance cognitive flexibility. In posttest, they were assessed in WCST and ADI-R. All measures of cognitive flexibility improved in posttest except for failure to maintain set. Among the measures improved in posttest, perseverative errors and responses improved in posttest with statistical significance as well as categories completed. Total scores on ADI-R were lower in posttest as well as scores on communication abilities. The qualitative improvement showed by the individuals of this research concerning cognitive flexibility and also patterns of restricted behavior, social interaction, and communication abilities suggests that individuals with autism can benefit from the development of strategies for the enhancement of cognitive flexibility. Nevertheless, more research is suggested with a larger sample among subjects on the autism spectrum.

Communicative skills of children with autistic spectrum disorder: clinical and family perception
(2021) FREITAS, Fernanda Aparecida Ferreira de; MONTENEGRO, Ana Cristina de Albuquerque; FERNANDES, Fernanda Dreux Miranda; DELGADO, Isabelle Cahino; ALMEIDA, Larissa Nadjara Alves; ALVES, Giorvan Ânderson dos Santos
ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the communication skills of children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), considering the clinical and family perspective. Methods: from the point of view of parents and therapists, the language of ten children with ASD was analyzed. All children underwent speech therapy at the outpatient clinic of a Speech Therapy School. Two protocols were used for data collection. Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC), which was applied to the children's parents, and Protocol for Assessment of Pragmatic Skills of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders - called Pragmatic Protocol (PP), which was answered by therapists. The data were examined through a descriptive statistical analysis, considering absolute and relative frequency, and inferential statistics, through the Chi-square test, with a 5% of significance for all analyses. Results: an expressive presence of communicative deficits, in the answers presented by the therapists, was seen. In the protocol answered by the parents, it was also possible to observe the same trend, since the children failed to score in several items of Subscale I. Conclusion: parents and therapists evidenced changes in the communicative skills of the children surveyed, and emphasized that therapists, who have technical linguistic knowledge, like parents, can also be good informants about their children's communicative development process.

Speech-Language Intervention for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder in Brazil
    (2014) FERNANDES, Fernanda Dreux Miranda; AMATO, Cibelle A. H.; DEFENSE-NETRVAL, Danielle A.; MOLINI-AVEJONAS, Daniela R.
Brazil has more than 200 million inhabitants living in an area of more than 8.5 million km(2) (Ministerio da Saude, Brasil, 2013a,b). Granting access to health and educational services for populations in such different environments clearly demands different actions and resources. Official policies regarding rehabilitation services and education to children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are being gradually defined and implemented. This article aims to present an overview of the Brazilian health system that considers health as a universal right and a state's duty. Some of the strategies created to provide services to persons with different needs living in different environments are outlined. Specifically in what refers to persons with ASD, there are laws, bills of rights, and guidelines, but their implementation is gradual and uneven. More developed regions provide more comprehensive support to these persons and their families, but some initiatives of outreach are being implemented. Speech-language pathology services are integrated to the health system and present their own challenges. Undergraduate programs for speech-language pathology include ASD as part of the mandatory training, and there are postgraduate studies in the field. Some challenges are being met by several initiatives by different groups as parents, scientific associations, and universities. Issues such as tests and protocols that can be used to Portuguese-speaking children and the identification of efficient methods that can be applied in different situations and orientation to parents and families have been object of research for some decades. There are still many challenges that must be addressed to provide adequate health and educational services to children with ASD and their families in Brazil.
