Correlation between weight and volume of the chorioallantoic membrane of Thoroughbred mares with maternal, parental and newborn variables

Background: Studies in large animals showed that maternal, parental and neonatal characteristics can be correlated and determine placental development. Methods: Delivery of 30 mares* (Thoroughbred) was accompanied in RS-Brazil. Maternal, paternal and neonatal variables were compiled and placental weight and volume assessed by stereological methods. Results: Positive correlation was found between the pregnant horn volume and: placental weight (r=0.568), the non-gravid horn volume(r=0.830), the uterus volume (r=0.728), the cord umbilical length (r=0.427) and with the rise time of foals (r=0.624). Positive correlation between the placental weight and mother thoracic perimeter (r=0.513),the foal weight (r=0.476) and the father thoracic perimeter (r=0.501) was also found. Conclusion: Volume and placental weight correlations are important and relate neonatal development (placental volumes of the compartments) and its interaction with the external environment (time rise). These parental physical characteristics may be decisive and an important parameter for choosing for future crosses.
