O cotidiano, o lúdico e as redes relacionais: a artesania do cuidar em terapia ocupacional no hospital
(2012) ANGELI, Andrea do Amparo Carotta de; LUVIZARO, Nathália Azevedo; GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria
The aim of this study was to reflect on the ways of doing, feeling and conducting story-telling actions in a pediatric ward. These practices resulted from university extension activities within the scope of occupational therapy. This reflection was done by reviewing the literature and discussing field notes on the project, and was based on a theoretical framework grounded in care technologies and in play within the context of hospital interventions, from the perspective of comprehensive and humanized care. Storytelling is presented as a means of promoting listening, reception, different affectations and bonding processes, thereby making it possible to set up a support network among the players present in the ward. It thus reaffirms professional healthcare practices in the hospital through continual construction among the subjects by using individualized technological tools that promote meetings and happenings.

This ethnographic study reflected upon the experiences of prolonged hospitalization among children with chronic and complex conditions (CCC). Data was collected from the patients' medical records, participant observation, and interviews conducted with the parents of children hospitalized in two pediatric units. The findings reveal that the patients' daily lives were engendered by an intimate relationship between the body and environment and the importance of the mediation of parents and health professionals in this setting. A number of considerations are suggested, including the fact that the health needs of children with CCC extend beyond medication and techniques. It is vital to understand that the daily life of these children is played out temporarily in the hospital and therefore theses settings require the active presence of mothers and the provision of spaces and activities to optimize the daily lives of these children.

(2015) GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria; BRAGA, Claudia Pellegrini; MIETO, Fernanda Stella Risseto; PARREIRA, Fernanda Viotti; SARMENTO, Gabrielle Quintiliano; MOTTA, Margareth; SILVA, Mariane Campopiano Abrahao; SANTOS, Mirella Ferreira; SPINOLA, Priscilla Feres; LIMA, Raquel; MITRE, Rosa Maria de Araujo; LAGOA, Thais dos Reis Olher; OLIVEIRA, Thelma Almir; SANTOS, Walkyria de Almeida
This article presents the results of a participatory action research with occupational therapists in a community of practice which purpose was to discuss the care production provided by occupational therapy to hospitalized children and adolescents. The participants were nine occupational therapists from hospitals of the city of Sao Paulo. Ten face-to-face meetings were conducted and a Web-mediated environment was created for conducting virtual activities. The face meetings were recorded and tapped. This article aims to present the evaluation made by the participants and researchers about the process experienced in the community. Through content analysis, seventeen reporting units were identified and grouped into four main themes: the dialogic process; theoretical and practical implications; reflective process; participatory process and its barriers. The process evaluation showed that dialogue during the meetings contributed to a sense of belonging, integration, and awareness/group cohesion and made possible discussing and reflecting on topics relevant to the practice of occupational therapist. Direct communication proved to be the main form of exchange among the professionals in the group. The participants working conditions, the computers and virtual environments access issues, the surplus work generated by meetings and the displacement in urban centers were complicating factors for the participant's greater adhesion. Evaluation showed that this strategy favored the construction of shared knowledge, and its implementation can foster reflection, research development and knowledge production, as well as contribute to the occupational therapist professional practice improvement.

Occupational therapy and social education: a four-decade follow-up of the institutional trajectory of adolescents and young people
(2023) VEDOVELLO, Adilaine Juliana Scarano; SANTAMARIA, Larissa Mazzotti; SAID, Giovanna Augusta Delorenzo; ROSA, Tamara Harumi Yamagute; GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria
The Adolescent Guidance Center of Campinas (COMEC), a civil society organization, has adopted, as pillars of assistance since its foundation in 1980, the guarantee of the fundamental principles of human rights and the promotion of social education as a tool of intervention and transformation. Its history of providing open-setting follow-up for adolescent and young offenders and their families precedes the assumptions and guidelines of the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA) of the Unified Social Assistance System and the National Socio-Educational Assistance System. COMEC has become a reference in the municipality of Campinas, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil in the execution of socio-educational measures of Assisted Liberty (AL) and Provision of Services to the Community (PSC) through the development of solid work in the field of social assistance. This study aims to present the trajectory of occupational therapy at COMEC from 1984 to 2022 through a university teaching-extension partnership conducted by the Occupational Therapy Course of the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas. Since then, occupational therapists have composed the technical teams of AL and PSC as essential reference professionals to develop this work, as well as assumed management activities. Occupational therapy has contributed, in a powerful and diversified way, to offer a follow-up to adolescents, young people, and their families, and has accumulated experiences in the execution of socio-educational measures that can contribute to its repertoires of action.

An occupational therapy community of practice within pediatric acute care: fostering professional, social and cultural capital in resource challenged settings
(2019) GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria; BRAGA, Claudia Pellegrini; MAGALHAES, Lilian; KINSELLA, Elizabeth Anne
Introduction: The need to address the way professional knowledge is produced and delivered, has led some occupational therapy scholars to advocate for the creation of communities of practice (CoP) where practitioners may find a generative environment to engage in reflection with others, to collectively share their knowledge, and to develop professional practice knowledge. CoPs may result in the development of social capital by strengthening practitioners' social connections and advance cultural capital by improving collaborative forms of reflection and knowledge exchange. Objective: This article presents findings from a participatory action research project regarding the creation of a (CoP) with the aim to implement and examine its affordances among pediatric occupational therapists working in acute cam in a Brazilian context. Method: This participatory action research involved nine occupational therapists in 10 face-to-face meetings and in virtual interaction through an e-learning software platform. The community of practice group sessions were recorded, transcribed and coded. The hermeneutic and dialectic method was used as the basis for interpreting the results. Results: Five major themes concerning the affordances of the Occupational Therapy . CoP in this context were identified: (i) dialogic engagement; (ii) reflective opportunities; (iii) a sense of belonging; (iv) affirming professional identity; (v) cultivating professional practice knowledge. Conclusion: Developing a CoP in occupational therapy may be a fruitful way to cultivate professional, social and cultural capital amongst occupational therapists who work in resource challenged settings.

Knowledge production, perspectives and theoretical-practical references in Brazilian occupational therapy: milestones and tendencies in a timeline
(2018) GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria; BRAGA, Claudia Pellegrini; ARTHUR, Mariana Aparecida; MATSUO, Catia Mari
Throughout its history, occupational therapy in Brazil has been incorporating and modifying theoretical-methodological perspectives and theoretical-practical references in consonance with historical, social and political contexts. Academic and professional production has been an important tool for spreading new references to the profession. This article aims to present and discuss the emergence of theoretical-methodological perspectives and theoretical-practical references by the Brazilian occupational therapy, from 1956 to 2017, according to historical, social and political milestones, based on indexed national journals of the area and gray literature for the years before their creation. This is a theoretical research on the historical-epistemological foundations of occupational therapy. We mapped and analyzed the production to identify trends and regularities, and thus present a systematic proposal of incorporation of perspectives and references in the area. This study identified four main movements: (i) Constitution of the first theoretical-practical bases of occupational therapy in Brazil; (ii) Problematization of the knowledge and practices of occupational therapy, based on contributions from Collective Health and Human and Social Sciences; (iii) Constitution of the fields of knowledge and practice of occupational therapy through socio-political contextualization, theoretical-conceptual problematization and proposition of emancipatory practices; (iv) Intense theoretical-conceptual and methodological diversification in the production of occupational therapy knowledge and practices. Panoramic studies on academic and professional production are necessary for the epistemological reflection of the profession. The study identified the emergence of critical thinking in Brazilian occupational therapy at the end of the 1970s, and the continuity of practices. knowledge perspectives and references previously presented.

Photos, narratives, and impressions about the city of children living in the periphery of Sao Paulo
(2021) BERTAGNONI, Larissa; GALHEIGO, Sandra Maria
Children in vulnerable conditions represent the social group most exposed to constraints that make it difficult to know and belong to the city where they live. The objective of this research was to know and understand the perceptions of children living in complex vulnerable conditions, living in the periphery, about their neighborhood in the city of Sao Paulo, as well as to identify the relations they establish with these spaces. It was collaborative participatory research through photovoice. Seven meetings were held with a group of five children between 08 and 10 years old, without severe mental disorders, being followed up at a Child and Adolescent Psychosocial Care Center (CAPSij). The verbal and visual narratives underwent a thematic analysis in dialogue with the researcher's field diary, which resulted in the following categories: (1) Body: experimenting with oneself and forming a group, (2) CAPSij: revisiting a known space through photography, (3) The territory as a place of desire and consumption, (4) Everyday life paths and life histories at a physical and existential territory and (5) The subtleties amidst the concrete of the city: territory and nature. The research revealed that children have a detailed and critical view of their spaces of circulation and their relationships with them. A view permeated by their singularities of life, attending to the beautiful and the subtlety of nature amid the gray concrete of the city, constantly dialoguing with mass cultures and hegemonic social values.
